The Ultimate FAQ Guide to Solar Battery Enclosures

What is a solar battery enclosure?

A solar battery enclosure is a cabinet designed to protect your solar battery from outdoor elements.

These boxes are well-insulated, thermally regulated, and protect against rain.

Solar batteries are deep cycle batteries meant for frequent full discharge and full charge cycles.

Enclosures help house these solar batteries for eco-friendly energy usage.

Solar battery cabinet

Solar battery cabinet

Do solar battery enclosures need venting?

Solar battery enclosures require vents to prevent battery overheating.

This helps prolong battery life.

Also, ventilation allows gases, such as hydrogen, released by the batteries to escape the enclosure and prevent its dangerous buildup.

Typically, passive venting is enough.

However, active venting may be required in extremely rare cases.

Passive vents or breathers include holes, mesh, and louvered vents.

Passive louvered breathers

Passive louvered breathers

Active vents, such as radiating fans or door fans, help cool the enclosure more intensely.

Active venting

Active venting

These also stabilize air pressure inside the enclosure, preventing condensation which can damage the electrical wiring housed in the enclosure.

Plus, the vents can be further upgraded to air conditioners and heat exchangers.

What types of batteries are housed in solar battery enclosures?

KDM battery enclosures can house 4 main types of batteries.

These types are lithium-ion, nickel-based, lead-acid, and flow.

Li-ion batteries are commonly used in the electric car industry, and in alternative power sources industry.

There are different types of Li-ion batteries with varying chemical makeup.

No matter the specific type, all lithium-ion batteries are low-maintenance and efficient.

However, they are expensive and require protection from excessive voltage.

Li-ion batteries

Li-ion batteries

Lead acid batteries, which could be flooded or VRLA.

Flooded batteries are the traditional deep cycle-style battery.

Its liquid electrolyte moves freely in the cell compartment.

These flooded batteries are common in the car starting batteries, ATV batteries, motorcycle batteries, and solar backup systems.

Deep cycle batteries are designed for regular full discharge down to most of their capacity.

VRLA stands for Valve Regulated Lead Acid battery.

Here, the valve mechanism provides a safe regulation of the exit of hydrogen and oxygen gasses during the operation of the battery.

VRLA batteries are often used in mobility scooters, alarms, toys, and other everyday applications.

VRLA batteries can be either AGM or gel batteries.

Lead acid batteries are inefficient, but they are cheap.

Lead acid battery

 Lead acid battery

Nickel-based batteries do not require maintenance, venting, or cooling.

This is why they are great for off-grid applications, such as solar panels out in the wild.

Nickel-cadmium batteries are the easiest to manufacture solar battery enclosures for due to their ease of maintenance.

Nickel-based battery

Nickel-based battery

Flow batteries are new and advances in design.

They use zinc and bromide, allowing them a flexibility in storage capacity and power output.

This means that solar enclosures for these batteries could also be more flexible in design and configuration.

To increase capacity, flow storage systems do not need additional batteries; they only need more electrolyte fluid.

Flow batteries

Flow batteries

Our professional team knows a lot about many industries, and the solar power industry is one of them.

We will help you design the perfect cabinet for your off-grid battery bank and more.

What are off-grid solar battery cabinets?

Solar electricity supply can be set up in 3 main ways: grid-connected excluding a battery, grid-connected including a battery, and off-grid.

Let’s unpack all this.

Firstly, the main grid is regular electricity, not solar power.

Grid-connected installation without battery is most common in residential buildings and homes.

Grid-connected system

Grid-connected system

It means that during the day, solar energy powers the home, while the main grid works in the evenings.

Here, a solar battery enclosure is not necessary because there is no battery.

Grid-connected with a battery needs an enclosure and a solar inverter.

This hybrid system allows for excess power to be stored in a battery and used in the evenings, resorting to grid when the battery is discharged.

Off-grid solar systems are completely independent of other energy sources.

This is the most eco-friendly option, but it is also expensive and complex.

Usually, such systems are used in remote properties.

For these applications, solar battery enclosures become very important.

They will likely house a large capacity of solar batteries, need to be low-maintenance, and have good weatherproof qualities.

Off-grid system

Off-grid system

Since solar power storage provides the only or the main source of electricity in these applications, solar battery cabinets need to have impeccable quality.

We offer insulated, weatherproof off-grid solar power battery box enclosures.

How are solar battery enclosures rated?

Commonly, outdoor solar battery enclosures are rated as IP65, IP66, or NEMA 3R and 4/4X.

Here is what this all means.

NEMA and IP ratings

NEMA and IP ratings

IP65 means that the enclosure is dust-tight and protects from weak jets of water.

This is great for normal outdoor rain and some splashing.

IP66 provides a little more protection from water ingress.

It withstands more powerful jets of water, such as thunderstorm rain.

NEMA 3R provides great protection against rain, storm, and formation of ice, but has limited protection against dust.

NEMA 4 is completely watertight, and NEMA 4X includes additional protection against corrosion.

This is perfect for outdoor industrial and marine applications of solar power.

KDM waterproof solar battery enclosures protect batteries against vandalism, ingress of hose-down, splashing water, oil and coolant.

You can also request less protected enclosures, such as IP56, if you plan on installing solar battery cabinets indoors.

Naturally, you can also request highly protected cabinets for hazardous locations.

How many batteries can 1 enclosure house?

This, of course, depends on the dimensions of your enclosure, the type of batteries and their size.

Normally, a maximum of 60 small battery blocks fit into a large enclosure.

At KDM, we can design a battery enclosure that will house as many batteries as you wish.

All these batteries can be connected in series or in parallel.

The batteries could have positive, negative and middle point poles.

Quantity of batteries

Quantity of batteries

What sizes of batteries can solar battery enclosures house?

Solar batteries suitable for enclosures can be of the following sizes: 27, 31, U1, 8G4D, 8G8D.

These are groups that categorize enclosures based purely on physical size; any correlations with capacity are used as examples.

Group 27 batteries are sized 30.6 x 17.3 x 22.5 centimeters.

These have 80-100 ampAh.

Group 31 batteries are sized 33 x 17.3 x 24 centimeters.

These have 90-120 ampAh.

Group U1 batteries are sized 19.7 x 13.2 x 18.6 centimeters.

These are general purpose, 12 V batteries with 6 cells, and they have 30-40 ampAh.

Group 8G4D batteries are sized 52.7 x 21.6 x 27.9 centimeters.

These are12 V  heavy-duty commercial batteries, and have a capacity of 210 amperes.

Group 8G8D batteries are sized 53 x 27.5 x 28 centimeters.

These industrial batteries have a capacity of 265 amperes.

The size and dimensions of your solar battery enclosure is determined by the dimensions of your solar battery system.

Groups 8D and 4D are large industrial batteries used primarily in solar energy systems, so they are usually the ones housed in solar battery cabinets.

Do DC and AC matter for a solar battery enclosure design?

Solar energy systems could be coupled with direct current or coupled with alternating current.

The main difference between these systems is that a DC battery will use the same solar inverter to convert its stored DC power into AC power.

DC-coupled solar system

DC-coupled solar system

In the meantime, an AC battery has its own built-in inverter that allows the battery to directly convert its stored DC power into AC power.

This power is then usable to electrify various devices and appliances.

AC-coupled solar system

AC-coupled solar system

Structurally, this matters little for the configuration of the solar battery enclosure.

An AC battery may just need a little bit more space for the built-in inverter.

However, a DC enclosure could theoretically use a lot of space if both the battery and the separate inverter are housed in the same enclosure.

So, this does not matter much.

What additional enclosed devices do I need for solar batteries?

There is a variety of devices that make the function of your solar power system safer and more efficient—and all these need their own enclosures.

For example, if you want to directly connect your solar panels to your solar battery bank, then you need a battery charge controller.

This device regulates the constantly changing output voltage and current from a solar panel.

The sun changes angle, and clouds can cover the sun—thus different power input.

The controller matches it to the needs of the batteries being charged.

Solar battery charge controller

Solar battery charge controller

This device is small and does not need another enclosure, but it does need extra space or an extra compartment in the solar battery cabinet.

Another important device is a solar energy inverter or a PV converter.

This is an electrical current converter that transforms DC into usable AC.

These devices are recommended to be installed indoors, but that is not possible, KDM will supply you with reliable weatherproof enclosures.

Additionally, more junction boxes may be installed, but this depends on the specifics of your solar energy system.

Some more devices include circuit breakers and additional wiring.

What is a BBA2 or BBA6 solar battery enclosure?

BBA stands for Battery Box Aluminum, meaning that it is a heavy-gauge cabinet for batteries made from aluminum.

The number after the abbreviation represents how many batteries the enclosure can hold—depending on the size.

Generally, a BBA2 can hold 2 batteries from group 27.

A BBA6 can hold 6 batteries from groups 27, 30, and 31.

However, the same box can hold only 2 batteries of groups 8G4D and 8G8D.

There can also be BBA1 and BBA10 solar battery enclosures.

What industry-specific features do solar battery enclosures have?

As mentioned above, solar battery enclosures have ventilation—fans or breathers—as safety features to let gases escape and prevent battery overheating.

You can also choose fan kits, filters, and gas vents if you are developing enclosures for specialized industrial applications.

We will provide you with a personalized solution to enhance the work of your batteries.

Also, waterproof solar battery cabinets have special rubber or neoprene gaskets to protect the enclosure from water, oil, or coolant ingress.

Gaskets for solar battery boxes

Gaskets for solar battery boxes

Solar battery enclosures may also have lockable doors to prevent unauthorized access.

We offer a large range of locks, clasps, and hinges.

You can also include safety spill containment/drain, a DC disconnect, insulation, and a sun shield.

A spill containment refers to a threshold or the enclosure opening that ensures no dripping or spills overflow out of the enclosure.

This is particularly useful if your solar batteries are of the flooded type.

Spill containment

Spill containment

A DC disconnect is used with solar batteries and panels to protect appliances from surges of energy.

Damage can be done to interior wiring, so a DC disconnect is a necessary safety measure made for rapid shutdown.

It is basically a circuit breaker.

In some places in the US, a DC disconnect is required by law, so including it in a solar battery cabinet is crucial for safety.

DC disconnect

Insulation is a safety feature meant to maintain the inside temperature of the solar battery enclosure for longer lifespan of your solar batteries.

This could mean preventing excess heat, but also preventing excess cold.

Insulated solar battery cabinet

Insulated solar battery cabinet

Heat strips with a thermostat help protect your solar batteries from freezing in the winter or during cold nights.

A sun shield protects the solar battery enclosure from direct sunlight that would heat up the enclosure.

Solar shields are basically another layer on top of an enclosure that reflect solar radiation, creating a shade and controlling inside temperature of the enclosure to prolong the life of its electrical components.

In alternative energy applications, this solar shield can be substituted by a solar panel that would charge batteries inside the enclosure.

Solar shield

Solar shield

Another industry-specific feature is a solar panel holder.

They are attached to the solar battery enclosure using brackets, and hold up the solar panel.

Thus, the panel and the battery cabinet are connected to each other.

You can assemble this holder on your own, but it may be more efficient for your business to just request this feature from KDM.

How are underground solar battery enclosures different?

Underground solar battery enclosures are hidden underground to save space and landscape.

These battery enclosures are watertight, resist dust and dirt–which is standard for solar battery enclosures.

However, underground solar battery boxes are thermally stable, and protect the environment from toxic battery leakage.

They can have a venting system is housed inside a larger concrete box.

Alternatively, these enclosures may omit ventilation if they use batteries like Li-ion.

Heat strips are important here, since temperature underground is lower than at the surface.

Low temperatures shorten the lifespan of many batteries, so thermal regulation is crucial here.

Underground solar battery cabinets are typically made from fiberglass or plastic because these materials are more resistant to corrosive agents prevalent in soil.

What are some tips to design a battery enclosure?

Below are some points you should keep in mind while designing or proofreading designs for your perfect battery enclosures.

1. What equipment are you putting there? Are you including a charge controller or an inverter?

This would define the configuration of your enclosure.

So, whether you need racks, compartments, shelves, knockouts, or separate doors.

2. What is the size and number of your solar batteries?

This determines the height, width, and depth of your solar battery  enclosure.

3. When designing height, consider extra space for chargers and fans, and space for battery maintenance.

4. What environment will your solar battery enclosures be in?

Outdoor solar battery enclosures need extra protection against dust and water than do indoor enclosures.

Also, extreme cold and extreme hot weather should also be considered.

This will also help decide on the material.

5. How will you be mounting your battery enclosure?

So, what type of brackets do you need? Do you need handles or underground-specific features?

What materials can be used for solar battery enclosures?

The materials used for weatherproof solar battery enclosures are not different from materials used for other types of enclosures.

Metal battery enclosures include those manufactured from carbon (mild) steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel—most commonly of the grades 304 or 316.

Carbon steel is usually duller than stainless steel.

It is also magnetic and more malleable since it only has iron and carbon.

This steel is also prone to corrosion, making it less suitable for outdoor solar batteries.

Stainless steel is created by adding chromium, nickel, and molybdenum to the iron-carbon alloy.

Stainless steel battery enclosure

 Stainless steel battery enclosure

Steel grades 304 and 316 differ in the content of these additives.

Grade 316 is slightly stronger and resistant to saline and acidic water because of molybdenum.

But grade 304 is cheaper and more common.

Galvanized steel is coated with a protective layer of zinc that prevents corrosion.

Galvanized steel

Galvanized steel

Please note that galvanized steel is more expensive and heavier than stainless steel.

Yet, it is perfectly suitable for outdoor solar power storage cabinets.

Solar battery enclosures are also commonly made from aluminum alloys.

They are not necessarily better than steel alloys, but can be depending on what you are going for and what are your needs.

Just like steel has grades, aluminum alloys have series numbers.

BBAs can be either of the 5052 or the 6061 series.

Aluminum battery enclosure

Aluminum battery enclosure

Alloy 5052 is more weldable, meanwhile, 6061 has a higher resistance to corrosion.

Also, 6061 is more expensive.

Solar BBA enclosures are highly popular for all designs of cabinets and cases because aluminum is lightweight.

This material is especially good for industrial solar battery enclosures exposed to solvents, petrochemicals, some acids, most sulfates, and nitrates.

There are also fiberglass battery enclosure boxes and plastic battery enclosures.

These are typically for portable applications, underground boxes, or small batteries.

Also, plastic protects well from corrosion but may be easier to break than metal battery enclosures.

Plastic battery enclosure box

What mounting options for solar battery enclosures can I choose from?

We are happy to offer you countless models of free-standing enclosures, floor-mounted enclosures, wall-mounted enclosures, pole-mounted enclosures, and tower-mounted enclosures.

Free-standing enclosures and floor-mounted enclosures are perfect either for large solar batteries or many batteries that are too heavy to be wall-mounted or pole-mounted.

Free-standing battery enclosures could be of any height, width, and depth according to your requirements.

They can be portable if you choose to include casters.

And, they can be big enough to be categorized as walk-in enclosures that allow a fully-grown adult to enter the cabinet.

Floor-mounted solar battery cabinet

Floor-mounted solar battery cabinet

However, this is rare, and used mostly to house other electrical equipment in addition to batteries in heavy-duty industrial environments.

We can also manufacture small free-standing enclosures to be floor-mounted or just placed down.

Floor-mounted means that the enclosure is screwed into the floor or ground—it is completely stationary.

This protects your solar batteries from strong storm winds and theft.

Free-standing battery enclosure

What features can I request for solar battery enclosures?

You can request active vents, windows, hinged doors, locks, cable management systems, and much more.

Windows help personnel examine the electrical components in a quick and non-invasive way.

If something goes wrong, a window helps to see what is happening right away.

Windows can also help check the charge level of a solar battery to monitor its efficiency.

Hinged doors control how and how much the door or cover of a battery enclosure opens.

Locks add a layer of security to your battery enclosure.

Key locks, electronic locks, and clasps make sure no one tampers with it or accidentally accesses its batteries and chargers.

This improves safety and helps control access to electrical solar batteries.

Lockable enclosures

Besides certain features, you can also add a number of small accessories.

For example, rain caps are slanted roof-like top pieces that make water slide off the side of the enclosure, thus protecting it from water ingress.

Solar battery enclosures benefit much from this feature, prolonging its life outdoors.

Lifting eyes

 Lifting eyes

We also make casters, thermometers, lifting eyes, and more.

Lifting eyes help transport your enclosure if it is too big for casters, which may be the case with free-standing solar battery bank enclosures.

Casters provide another way of making the enclosure portable, which is great for a solar battery cabinet.

What configurations do solar battery cabinets come in?

You can choose any configuration for your outdoor solar battery enclosure.

Configurations are customized using racks, dividers, inner compartments, and separate doors.

Racks and dividers can be used to configure the space inside your battery enclosure.

Racks can be used as tiers for many batteries.

Dividers can separate your batteries from other equipment housed in the same enclosure.

Dividers can be horizontal or vertical.

Plus, there could be whole separate compartments inside the enclosure—with a separate door.

Compartments in a battery enclosure

Compartments in a battery enclosure

Also, you can choose to include electrical integration, such as overhead lighting, power strips, and door alarms.

These can even be powered by the solar batteries housed inside the enclosure.

Of course, we also have our custom enclosures, which can be of any design, shape, and requirements, as well as have multiple doors.

You can request any feature to better suit your work environment.

We are happy to create your perfect custom KDM solar battery cabinet!

How can I customize my solar battery enclosure?

Our customizing services include engraving and silk-screening.

Silk screening is the easiest and most cost-effective method of customization of battery enclosures.

Any flat side of the enclosure can be silk-screened with labels, warnings, serial number, your company name and logo.

Silk screening in red

 Silk screening in red

Engraving your battery enclosure is another customization method.

Usually, about 0.005 inches or 0.010 inches of metal is removed from the surface.

The requested symbol is basically scratched into the surface.

Once the metal has been removed, it is filled in with epoxy paint of any color to match your requirements.

Engraving

   Engraving

You can also customize and increase the protection by choosing the right coating.

You can request wet or powder paint coats in any color.

Wet coat usually has a glossy finish and is resistant to different weather conditions.

This paint is wet when it is applied and is similar to epoxy paint.

Specific epoxy and PU enamel paints are commonly used for industrial enclosures since they are resistant to corrosion and impact.

Powder paint is deposited with the electrostatic force—like a dry spray.

This is quicker and easier than enamel.

It is also more flexible in appearance, giving you the option of glossy and matte finishes.

Powder coating

Powder coating

However, powder coating may not be as protective as wet coats are.

We also offer anodizing and alodining coatings.

Anodizing coating uses anodes to oxidize a metal—usually aluminum—to improve resistance to corrosion.

Steel is not anodized because this process can actually speed up the corrosion of this metal.

Alodine coating, also known as the chromate conversion coating, is used to prime steel and aluminum for paint.

Like other coatings, it also prevents corrosion.

Alodine coating

Alodine coating

This is a cheaper process than anodizing.

It has a characteristic greenish-yellow hue, unless it is painted over.

There can also be anti-graffiti and anti-poster coatings to protect your outdoor battery enclosure from vandalism.

We can provide any coating in any color and finish, so contact us today!

What maintenance do solar battery enclosures require?

Batteries require venting to prevent overheating.

Also, solar flooded batteries require watering to keep their internal chemical reactions going.

However such batteries aren’t popular.

Thus, when designing enclosures, you need to consider space around the batteries for this maintenance.

Solar battery enclosures need thermal maintenance, rusting check-ups, and internal spill checks.

Hinges may need oiling once in a while, and windows need cleaning.

Internal devices like door alarms and LED lights also need frequent examinations for function.
